Once globally famous for its leather industry, Kanpur city in Uttar Pradesh is now the center of national discourse due to a horrific incident that crossed all bounds of humanity. A student who had traveled from Etawah for competitive exam coaching experienced this cruelty. He was trapped in a room and brutally beaten for six days.
A bid to burn his face was made using fire spray. Day and night, he was physically assaulted relentlessly, and whenever he lost consciousness, water was splashed on his face to wake him up and continue the beating. In a series of sadistic acts that went beyond torture, the perpetrators tied a brick to his private parts, causing excruciating pain to make him comply with their demands. The ordeal did not stop there; they committed sexual assaults, filmed obscene videos and extorted money by threatening to publish them.
What is the real story behind the atrocity in Kanpur? Who are these culprits willing to go to such extreme limits? Why were they beating a fellow student so mercilessly? What made them demand money from him? Let's dive deeper into this case and understand the full story starting from the very beginning. The victim, whom we'll call 'Raman' (name changed to protect identity), hails from Etawah. This year, he completed his 12th-grade exams and aimed to take competitive exams.
Raman had two friends, Shiva Tripathi and Keshav Tiwari, who were already attending coaching classes in Kanpur. Shiva is from the village of Sonvarsha in Etawah's Bakewar area, and Keshav hails from the village of Ikari Lakhan in Lavedi. Due to the proximity of their villages, the three shared a close friendship. On their recommendation, Raman also moved to the Kakadev area of Kanpur for coaching and arrived there on April 1st.
A terrifying incident triggered by an online game
On April 20th, Raman informed his friends that he was skilled at playing online games and could make a substantial sum of money with some initial capital. Seized by a financial burden already, Shiva and Keshav relayed this information to their acquaintance Tanay Chaurasia, who saw this as an opportunity to clear his debts by investing in Raman's supposed skill. Consequently, alongside some other boys, Chaurasia supplied Raman with 20,000 rupees.
From 20,000 to a lure of making 3.50 lakh rupees
Raman promised them that he could turn their 20,000 rupees into 350,000. However, the very next day, Raman appeared dejected in front of his friends, informing them that he had lost all the money. This revelation sent Shiva and Keshav into a panic, and upon discovering the loss, an enraged Chaurasia captured Raman, taking him to a boys' hostel room where he was subsequently confined. This marked the beginning of a series of violent acts.

The savagery in the hostel room
Chaurasia began his brutal assault on Raman over the 20,000 rupees, with accomplices including Abhishek Kumar from Mahoba, Yogesh Vishwakarma from Siddharthanagar, and Sanjeev Kumar Yadav from Jaunpur joining in. Raman's friends, Shiva and Keshav, were also implicated in this heinous act. Together, they beat Raman to a near-death state. Over six days, the ordeal continued in two separate rooms of the hostel.
A case registered under various sections against the accused
In the process, 31 videos were created, and demands for 250,000 rupees were made after sending these to Raman's family. Meanwhile, the videos went viral on social media, shocking anyone who viewed them. The disturbing content reached the police, who based on the victim's family's report, filed charges against the accused under IPC sections 147, 148, 343, 304, 307, 348, 384, 386, 506, 500, the IT Act 67 and the POCSO Act.
