Tesla Car Discount Offer:
Led by the world's richest entrepreneur Elon Musk, the American electric car giant Tesla made a grand entrance into India. However, many of the initial shipments of cars have yet to reach customers, prompting the company to offer significant discounts on its Model Y SUVs to clear out stock. Even six months after entering India, Tesla's sales momentum remains modest.
According to a report from ET, Tesla imported approximately 300 units of the Model Y SUV into India last year. Of these, nearly one-third, or about 100 cars, remain unsold four months later. Several customers who initially booked later decided against the purchase, and canceled their orders. This has put pressure on the company to clear its inventory.
Reports suggest that to boost sales, Tesla is offering discounts of up to 200,000 INR on certain variants. This offer is primarily on the Model Y Standard Range from last year. However, the company hasn't aggressively promoted this discount; instead, it is selectively informing potential buyers and those who have taken test drives about it, allowing them to take advantage of the savings. Tesla has so far made no official comment regarding the discount.

Tesla's tepid start in India comes at a time when the brand is facing challenges globally. It has been outpaced by China's leading electric automobile company, BYD, which became the best-selling electric car company in 2025. Tesla's stronghold in major markets like the USA, Europe, and China has also weakened.
In India, after test drives, many customers are opting for other alternatives. Some find BMW's iX1 more economical, while others see more features in BYD's Sealion 7. Both these cars have starting prices lower than the Model Y, creating direct competition for Tesla.
According to reports, Tesla secured around 600 bookings for the Model Y in India, but a significant number remain undelivered. In 2025, only 227 Tesla cars were registered nationwide, indicating that despite the high-profile entry, the journey ahead for Tesla in India is challenging.
The Tesla Model Y is available in two variants in the Indian market (Long Range and Standard). The Long Range RWD variant is equipped with an 84.2kWh battery pack offering a driving range of 661 km per single charge. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds. With the help of a super-fast DC charger, the battery can be charged enough in 15 minutes to drive 267 km. This higher variant is priced at 67.89 lakh INR (ex-showroom).
The Standard variant is slightly more affordable and features a smaller battery pack. It includes a 64kWh battery offering a driving range of around 500 km per single charge. This variant accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. Using a DC fast charger, the battery can be charged in 15 minutes, providing a 238 km driving range. The price for the Standard variant is 59.89 lakh INR (ex-showroom).
