Four years ago in Telangana, a lawyer couple was brutally murdered in broad daylight on the highway. Following a Supreme Court directive, the investigation of this heinous crime has been entrusted to the CBI. The court clearly stated while hearing Gattu Kishan Rao's plea that state police will no longer handle this case. Consequently, the CBI has now taken charge.
On February 17, 2021, Vaman Rao and his wife Nagamani were viciously killed on the Manthani-Peddapalli highway in Peddapalli district. Their car was halted, and they were dragged out, shot, and then assaulted with sharp weapons. Noteworthy names in this case include Velidi Vasant Rao, Kunta Srinivas, and Akkapakka Kumar as prime accused.
Initial investigations cited old enmities and personal vendettas as motives. However, the story does not stop there. The victim's father, Gattu Kishan Rao, informed the court that his son and daughter-in-law were consistently exposing corruption within the system. They regularly filed public interest litigations, making them targets of resentment.
In 2020, Vaman Rao and Nagamani had alerted the high court regarding a custody death at Manthani police station. Their call for action subsequently attracted threats. They even accused Manthani police of continued harassment. On the fateful day, assailants blocked their path, launching a brutal attack before fleeing the scene.
The state police filed a charge sheet, which the family claimed was biased, prompting them to approach the Supreme Court. After assessing their pleas, the court assigned the case to the CBI. Now, the central agency is set to unravel the complexities of this high-profile case, aiming to uncover the complete truth and submit its final report to the court.
