A video circulating on social media shows Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man in Bangladesh, speaking with individuals dressed as police officers shortly before being lynched by a mob. In the video, Dipu, clad in a blue full-sleeve sweatshirt and trousers, was trying to explain his situation.
This tragic incident occurred far from Dhaka in Mymensingh, where violent protests erupted following the assassination of India-opposing leader Sharif Usman Hadi. Taslima Nasreen, an exiled Bangladeshi author, shared the incident on social media, suggesting police involvement in Dipu Das's lynching, and questioned who would bring the murderers to justice.
Nasreen revealed in her post that Dipu Das was a factory worker in Mymensingh's Bhaluka area. Following a minor argument, a Muslim coworker falsely accused Das of making offensive comments about the Prophet, leading a mob to attack him.
According to Nasreen, the police had initially rescued Dipu from the mob and taken him into custody, suggesting he was under police protection. She stated that Dipu informed the police of his innocence, claiming the accusation was a conspiracy by his colleague. However, no action was taken against the accuser.

Nasreen questioned whether the police, influenced by extremist views, handed Dipu back to the mob or if radicals overpowered them. She lamented that the attackers publicly beat, hanged, and then burned Dipu.
Nasreen pointed out that Dipu Chandra Das was the sole breadwinner for his family, supporting his disabled father, mother, wife, and child. She questioned who would assist his relatives now and who would ensure the murderers faced justice. She noted that Dipu’s family lacked the means to escape to India for safety, highlighting the vulnerability of the impoverished without any support, homeland, or security.
Reacting to Nasreen's post, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor demanded clear actions for punishing those responsible for Dipu Das's lynching. He called it an unbearable tragedy amidst the rising mob mentality in Bangladesh.
Tharoor expressed his sorrow over the brutal murder of this impoverished Hindu man and acknowledged the Bangladesh government's condemnation but questioned what actions were being taken to punish the killers and prevent future incidents.
Meanwhile, on December 20, Bangladesh's Chief Advisor announced the arrest of seven suspects by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The arrests followed the lynching, where a mob, under accusations of blasphemy, beat Dipu Das to death.
