In Sultanpur, UP, strongman Chandrabhadra Singh, aka Sonu Singh, was jailed over past transgressions. His campaign efforts for SP's Lok Sabha candidate couldn't prevent defeat for BJP's Maneka Gandhi on June 4.
Former legislator Chandrabhadra Singh, along with another, was imprisoned for a case dating back three years, resulting from illegally demolishing a wall and assault. A court had ordered a one-and-a-half-year sentence with a fine of 23 thousand rupees, and subsequently, failure to surrender led to an arrest warrant.
Following court orders, Sonu Singh and another suspect appeared in court, were detained, and caused a stir in Sultanpur as locals speculate on the implications. Currently, Sonu is seeking bail.
The incident hails from the Mayang village of Dhanpatganj district, where residents accused Sonu Singh and his associate of forcibly demolishing a wall with a bulldozer in February 2021 and assaulting them on protest.
The MP-MLA court, hearing the case, had reserved its order and directed all accused to surrender on June 4. Rukhsar from Amethi complied, but Sonu Singh and Anshu were absent, prompting the court to issue an arrest order and set a hearing date.
On June 10, Sonu and Anshu appeared at the hearing. Despite their surrender, the court sentenced them to jail. They filed a petition in the higher court against the verdict but received no relief.
