Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam is on a noteworthy tour of India. On Wednesday, he was seen exploring the ancient forts, monuments, and streets of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Accompanied by a retinue of international guests, he visited the famed Patwon Ki Haveli. The president strolling across town in minimal security without a bulletproof vehicle was quite the extraordinary sight.
President Tharman was also spotted shopping at local stores, his simplicity and willingness to explore on foot becoming the talk of the town. Locals expressed their desire for their leaders to embrace such simplicity and unwavering accessibility to the public.

Earlier, President Tharman, surrounded by stringent security, walked the streets of the ancient city of Jaisalmer, over 870 years old, admiring the scenery and interacting with the locals. He appreciated traditional handicrafts and was impressed by the architectural artistry and craftsmanship of the region. In the evening, he enjoyed a camel ride in the sandy plains and relished Rajasthani folk music and dance.

President Tharman also visited the world-renowned Jaisalmer Fort, the Sonar Qila. Despite stringent security arrangements, the president opted to walk and immerse himself in the culture of the fort and its havelis. He admired the intricate carvings of the Jain temples within the fort's walls.

Following his visit to the fort, the president took to the streets on foot, strolling through the alleys and neighborhoods, enjoying the local craftsmanship. Alongside his family, he visited the Patwon Ki Haveli, Chidiya Haveli, and ventured through the main markets all the way to Bhatia Market. There, he was so taken with the traditional hand-embroidered products that he purchased vintage sari-made bedsheets and wall hangings for himself.

It is noteworthy that the public usually faces hours of traffic disruption during VVIP visits, but the Singaporean president left a different message in Jaisalmer – that he views everyone as equal, with no one higher than another.
