Violence erupted on 24th November in Sambhal district after a local court ordered a survey of Shahi Jama Masjid. This led to the deaths of four individuals and injuries to around two dozen people, including police officers. The police registered cases against over 2,500 individuals, most of whom remain unidentified. Among those charged are Samajwadi Party's Sambhal MP Zia Ur Rehman Bark and the son of Sambhal MLA Iqbal Mehmood, Sohail Iqbal.

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, has directed the police and administration to handle the rioters involved in the violence during the Shahi Jama Masjid survey with an iron hand. He stated that those who caused damage to public property should bear the cost of repairs. No miscreant should escape justice.
