The Controversial Statement by Sam
A video of Sam Pitroda surfaced during the Lok Sabha elections where he was noted saying, 'India is a country of incredible diversity, with people in the east resembling Chinese, those in the west resembling Arabs, the northerners looking like Caucasians, and those in the south resembling African people. Nevertheless, we are all brothers and sisters, respecting different languages, religions, and customs. This is the India I believe in, where everyone is respected and where everyone is ready to make small compromises.'
Resignation Handed by Sam on May 8th
Following the uproar, the Congress distanced itself from his statements, declaring them 'unacceptable'. Notably, Sam Pitroda had resigned from the position of President of the Indian Overseas Congress on May 8th.
Sam's Statement on the Inheritance Tax also Caused a Stir
Prior to this, Sam had also spoken about the inheritance tax, sparking considerable debate. He pointed out that in the United States, a hefty portion of an individual's estate is taxed upon their death, with around 55% of it claimed by the state, leaving the rest for the heirs. He appreciated the principle that one should leave a part of their wealth for the public benefit after their passing. However, he noted that India lacks such a law, where the entire estate goes to the decedents without public share. Sam believed that such topics warrant public discussion to formulate new policies that benefit the masses, not just the wealthy.
Leaders Including PM Modi Targeted Pitroda for His Comments
Sam Pitroda's controversial comments led to severe criticism from the BJP, which labeled him 'racist and divisive'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders criticized Rahul Gandhi's Congress for the remarks, with Modi stating that the country would not tolerate any derision of its citizens based on their skin color. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, presented himself as an Indian from the Northeast, emphasizing India's diverse yet united nature. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also accused Pitroda of racism, asserting her identity as a South Indian and acknowledging her northeastern team members as proud Indians.
