Ex-RBI Chief Shaktikanta Das Takes on Key Role as PM's Principal Secretary

Shaktikanta Das, former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, has been appointed as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His term will coincide with that of the Prime Minister. Appointed as RBI Governor in December 2018, Das served until December 10, 2024. According to the order, he will work alongside Principal Secretary-1 Dr. PK Mishra.

The notification issued by the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet states, "The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shaktikanta Das, IAS (Retired) (TN:80), as Principal Secretary-2 to the Prime Minister. This appointment will take effect from the day he assumes office and will continue throughout the Prime Minister's term or until further orders."

Shaktikanta Das: A 1980 Batch IAS Officer

The 67-year-old Shaktikanta Das, hailing from Bhubaneswar, Odisha, is an IAS officer of the 1980 Tamil Nadu cadre. Throughout his career, he has served in various capacities within the central and Tamil Nadu governments, holding roles such as Economic Affairs Secretary, Finance Secretary, and Fertilizer Secretary at the center. He is an alumnus of the prestigious St. Stephen's College in Delhi.

The Appointment of Das as RBI Governor

In an unexpected move, Shaktikanta Das was appointed as the head of the Reserve Bank in December 2018, succeeding Urjit Patel, under whose tenure the government executed demonetization. Reportedly, Patel had resigned due to disagreements over a lending policy change, leading to Das's appointment.

In 2021, the government extended Shaktikanta Das's tenure by three years. Last month, speculation about another extension was supplanted by the announcement of Sanjay Malhotra's appointment. With this extension, Das became one of the longest-serving heads of the Reserve Bank in nearly 70 years.
