In Bihar's Begusarai district, a tragic incident occurred due to railway negligence at Barauni Junction. A 35-year-old railway worker, Amar Kumar Raut, lost his life. This unfortunate event took place around 9 AM on Saturday at Platform No. 5. While attempting to decouple the engine and carriage of the Barauni-Lucknow Express train, shunting worker Amar Kumar Raut got trapped and crushed.
Panic ensued at the scene following the accident. Approximately two hours after the incident, the body was retrieved and placed on the platform. The deceased railway worker was identified as Amar Kumar Raut, a shunting man from Dalsinghsarai in Samastipur district. The 15204 Lucknow-Barauni Express had arrived at Platform No. 5 of Barauni Junction. Once all passengers had disembarked, the engine was to be changed for shunting purposes.
As the process of changing the engine began, shunting worker Amar Kumar Raut was attempting to open the coupling between the engine and carriage when he was crushed upon the engine’s reversing motion, leading to his immediate death. Onlookers raised an alarm, causing the driver to abandon the engine, fleeing the scene. This incident has led to significant unrest among those present.
Upon receiving information, a large number of railway workers and the deceased’s family residing in the Barauni railway colony rushed to the site. The relatives and union members allege that separating the engine and carriage requires four workers, but it was inadequately managed with only the driver and one railway worker, resulting in this mishap.
According to Sonpur DRM Vivek Bhushan, an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident and where the railway erred. Necessary actions will be taken against those responsible. Measures will also be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future. Additionally, compensation will be provided as per railway provisions following a worker's death. The deceased had joined the railway on compassionate grounds in 2021 after his father's passing.
