As the Lok Sabha Election 2024 nears, the BJP has unveiled its fifth candidate list on Sunday, spotlighting 111 contenders. Among them, Rajmata Amrita Roy from West Bengal's Krishnanagar seat is set to rival TMC's Mahua Moitra. Considered a crucial player, Roy's candidacy is seen as the BJP's trump card against Moitra.

In this electoral round, Maharaja Krishnachandra's legacy directly connects to politics. Amrita Roy, the Rajmata of Krishnanagar's esteemed Royal Palace, has become the talk of the town over her speculated candidacy in recent days.

Will BJP Benefit from Amrita Roy's Candidacy?

Amrita Roy joined the BJP on March 20. With opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari at her side, she secured party membership in Bengal. Roy's entry into the fray in Krishnanagar, historically significant due to Raja Krishnachandra, could boost the BJP and provide stiff competition for Mahua Moitra.

According to BJP sources, the district leadership revealed a keen interest in nominating Amrita Roy, and the party initiated discussions with her, leading to her agreement after multiple conversations.

Mahua Moitra's Sweeping Victory at the Last Election

TMC leader Mahua Moitra clinched victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Krishnanagar seat with 614,872 votes, surpassing BJP's Kalyan Chaubey by a significant margin of 63,218 votes. Experts believe that the three assembly segments of Chopra, Palashipara, and Kaliganj were pivotal to Moitra's victory, each granting her substantial support. Over the past five years, the BJP's organization in the Kaliganj assembly has notably strengthened.

Moreover, the BJP is contemplating the reduced organizational strength of TMC in the area in recent months. Accusations of corruption and internal strife within the ruling party could present challenges for TMC from an electoral standpoint.

BJP's strategy might involve leveraging influential and familiar local personalities like 'Ranimaa' to amplify its voter base, thus Armita Roy's nomination could significantly empower the BJP.
