The police have detained individuals protesting at the base camp of the Mata Vaishno Devi Temple in Katra. Demonstrators are demanding the halt of the proposed ropeway project in Katra. Traders kicked off a 72-hour shutdown on Wednesday in opposition to the project.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti called for the shutdown, stating that all activities in Katra would be suspended during the protest. Led by leaders Bhupinder Singh and Sohan Chand, hundreds marched through the city, alleging stubbornness against the Shrine Board and administration. However, clashes ensued when police attempted to halt the demonstrators' progress.

Several Protesters Detained

Authorities reported that numerous protesters, including Bhupinder Singh and Sohan Chand, were detained and transported from the protest site in police vehicles.

Bhupinder alleged that the government is diverting the issue and forcing Katra's people to take to the streets. He stated, "We are demanding the cancellation of the project to save thousands of jobs. Instead of engaging in dialogue as promised by the administration, they are using the police to detain us, which is regretful."

Former Minister Criticizes Administration

Former Minister Jugal Kishore criticized the "use of force" against protesters. He told the media, "We strongly condemn the administration's use of force against peaceful protesters. Their actions aim to worsen the situation in Katra, which is unacceptable. Instead of dialogue, they are aggravating the situation."

A committee spokesperson stated, "A 72-hour shutdown began Wednesday against the proposed ropeway project by pony owners, shopkeepers, and other local stakeholders."

The spokesperson noted that the administration initially scheduled a meeting for December 23 but postponed it to 3 PM today.

He said, "We met the Deputy Commissioner today, who requested more time to consult higher officials. Hence, we have decided to continue the strike."

Project Announcement Last Month

Last month, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board announced plans to set up a ropeway to facilitate access for senior citizens, children, and others who find the 13-kilometer trek to the cave temple challenging.

The proposed 250 crore project aims to connect the Tarakote route with Sanjichhat leading to the temple. Meanwhile, pilgrims expressed disappointment at the shutdown, citing inconvenience due to the closure of eateries and suspension of local transport.

A pilgrim told reporters, "We are facing numerous difficulties. During this three-day shutdown, where will pilgrims eat or rest? This is not the right way to protest."

He added, "We humbly request the protest leaders to call off the strike since thousands of pilgrims are experiencing hardships."
