An Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) Tribunal confirmed on Saturday the center's decision to impose a five-year ban on the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir and Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Jammu and Kashmir. The one-member tribunal headed by Justice Sachin Datta of the Delhi High Court was established in January to assess whether there were sufficient reasons behind the imposition of the ban under the stringent anti-terrorism law.
The Muslim League Jammu Kashmir was declared unlawful for engaging in anti-national and separatist activities within the union territory on December 27, 2023, under the UAPA.
Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, founded by the late separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, was declared unlawful for five years on December 31, 2023. The organization was banned for promoting terrorism and spreading anti-India propaganda in Jammu-Kashmir. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati and advocate Rajat Nayar represented the government before the tribunal.
The central government had imposed a sanction on the Muslim League Jammu-Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction) in December 2023. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had tweeted that the organization was banned under the UAPA due to its anti-national activities. A five-year ban was imposed on this organization. Amit Shah in a social media post stated that the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction)/MLJK-M was declared an unlawful organization under the UAPA.
This organization and its members are involved in anti-national and separatist activities in Jammu Kashmir and support terrorist activities, inciting people to establish Islamic rule in Jammu Kashmir. The message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is clear: anyone working against the unity, integrity, and sovereignty of our country will not be spared at any cost.
