Voting for the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 is set for May 20. Ahead of the polls, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra gave an exclusive interview to India Today Group's Consulting Editor Rajdeep Sardesai, answering a series of questions.
Priyanka stated, 'This election is not a duel between Modi and Rahul. It's not about family dynasties facing off against Modi. It's an election about the people. It addresses what we discuss daily. We propose giving women an annual amount of one lakh rupees for a decade to counter the financial crush of inflation. We're promising assured first jobs for youth and graduates because unemployment is crushing today's young people.'
Priyanka Gandhi emphasized the need for strong laws against exam paper leaks, stating, 'Paper leaks have destroyed the lives of our youth. They spend years waiting for appointments after their exams, only to have their lives shattered by these leaks. They can't even get married. We're advocating for forgiving farmers’ debts and removing GST from agricultural goods because during Modi Ji's ten-year tenure, farmers have been crushed, some even resorting to suicide.'
The Congress leader accused the Modi government of waiving debts for the ultra-rich while offering no relief to farmers. She contended that the real battle of this election is against the kind of politics that promises anything for the sake of power. She noted that PM Modi, instead of discussing public issues, is talking about buffaloes and mangalsutras in his campaign. 'If a tea seller can become the Prime Minister, we take pride in it too. We've established such a democracy in this country that gives everyone a chance,' she added.
