A second attempt to sabotage a train in a span of just one month has surfaced in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. On Sunday night around 8:30 PM, the Kalindi Express, en route from Prayagraj to Bhiwani, collided with LPG cylinders placed on the railway tracks. On the night of August 17, around 2:30 AM, 22 coaches of the Sabarmati Express derailed. The railway claimed a conspiracy was also involved in this incident.
According to the police, on the night of September 8 around 8:30 PM, the Kalindi Express collided with a filled LPG cylinder placed on the Anwar Ganj-Kasganj railway line between Barrajpur and Bilhaur. The locomotive pilot reported seeing something suspicious on the track and applied the brakes, but the object struck the train, causing a loud noise. The driver stopped the train and informed the guard and other personnel.
For the investigation of this incident, teams from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and other agencies arrived at the scene and began the probe. ATS units from Kanpur and Lucknow collected evidence on-site.
Upon receiving the information, the Railway Superintendent of Anwar Ganj station, RPF, and other railway officials reached the scene for an inspection. During the inspection, police found an LPG cylinder, petrol bottles, matchsticks, and other explosive substances in the bushes. The train resumed its journey after a half-hour halt. The police and forensic teams conducted a thorough investigation, sending all the suspicious items for further examination.
Additional Commissioner Harish Chandra, who arrived at the scene, stated that efforts are underway to apprehend the culprits. At present, the investigation is focusing on all aspects, with the forensic team conducting a detailed review.
22 Coaches of Sabarmati Express Derailed
Earlier, on the night of August 17, 22 coaches of the Sabarmati Express (19168) derailed on the Kanpur-Jhansi route. This train was traveling from Varanasi to Ahmedabad. The driver of the derailed train mentioned that the accident occurred due to hitting a boulder, which badly twisted the cattle guard of the engine. The investigation for this incident is still ongoing.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and UP police are investigating this accident. The evidence collected in this incident has been secured. No passengers or staff were injured in this incident, and arrangements were made for a train to Ahmedabad for the passengers.
150 Lives Lost in Train Accidents in 2016
Kanpur has witnessed several major train accidents in the past. In November 2016, the Indore-Patna Express derailed near Pukhrayan railway station in Kanpur Dehat, causing the deaths of approximately 150 people and injuring over 150 others. This accident is considered one of the major train disasters in the country. Following this, in 2017, the coaches of the Kaifiyat Express derailed near Auraiya, injuring more than 70 passengers.
