Patna's Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) finds itself amidst controversy yet again, and this time it's truly alarming. A disabled patient, Avadhesh Kumar, has claimed that on Saturday night, while he was in treatment and asleep, rats gnawed at his right foot's toes.

'I Noticed Blood Oozing from My Toes'

The unsettling incident occurred in the hospital's orthopedics department. On Sunday morning, Avadhesh Kumar awoke to find blood flowing from his toes. 'I noticed my toes were bleeding,' he shared. Witnessing this, his family immediately alerted the nurses and hospital staff, citing a rampant rat problem.

No Response from Health Minister Mangal Pandey

The head of the hospital's orthopedics department, Dr. Omprakash, stated, 'We have been informed about the incident. The medical superintendent has been apprised of the matter.' However, a response from Health Minister Mangal Pandey is yet to be seen.

Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav expressed sharp criticism on social media, stating, 'At Patna's NMCH, a disabled patient's toes were bitten by rats. Not too long ago, in this very hospital, a dead person's eye was consumed by rats, yet no action was taken.'

Tejashwi Raises Questions

Tejashwi asserted, 'Bihar's healthcare system is in complete disarray. The improvements we made over 17 months have been undone by the current government. How can patients be treated in hospitals where even cleanliness cannot be maintained?'

With a tinge of sarcasm, he added, 'Perhaps now it will be claimed that the patient's toes were cut by a multimillion-dollar robotic machine, not rats.'

Notably, in November 2024, the eyes of a deceased individual at the same hospital were also reportedly gnawed by rats, leading to the suspension of two nurses. This recent case starkly underscores the dire state of Bihar's public hospitals and the administration's negligence.
