NSA Ajit Doval Meets Chinese Foreign Minister with Stern Message on Terrorism

On Monday in Beijing, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with India's National Security Advisor and India's special representative on China-India border issues, Ajit Doval. Wang emphasized that China and India should aim for neighborly friendliness, strive for mutual benefits and win-win scenarios, showcase the historical wisdom of two ancient civilizations, appropriately handle sensitive issues, and maintain peace and harmony in border areas.

This visit is seen as a major effort by both sides to restore normal relations following the military standoff in Eastern Ladakh that started in May 2020. Such diplomatic engagements mark a crucial step forward in India-China relations, which have been tense since the 2020 military standoff. Both countries are working towards restoring normalcy and trust through diplomatic means.

During the meeting, NSA Ajit Doval stressed the need to combat all forms of terrorism for the sake of regional peace and stability. His call for counter-terrorism action comes nearly a month and a half after India conducted precise strikes on nine terrorist structures in Pakistani territories on the morning of May 7.

'Need to Promote Holistic Development...'

NSA Doval is attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's (SCO) top National Security officials' meeting in China, a significant regional group focused on security matters. Doval and Wang discussed various aspects of India-China relations amid ongoing efforts by both sides to rebuild ties following severe tensions after the Eastern Ladakh border standoff.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that both sides reviewed recent developments in India-China relations and highlighted the need to promote the overall development of ties, including fostering greater people-to-people engagement.

According to Chinese Ambassador to India, Sun Weidong, Wang noted some positive progress in China-India relations and stressed the importance of further enhancing communication, building mutual trust, and addressing practical issues together.

Sun Weidong stated on social media, "A win-win result is achievable only when the Dragon and the Elephant dance together. China and India must handle sensitive issues adeptly and maintain peace and harmony in border regions."

The ambassador added, "Doval expressed India's readiness to reinforce cooperation with China in multilateral sectors and extended full support for China's role as the rotating president of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in hosting a successful summit."

He further remarked that, as leading Asian nations, India and China can make even more significant contributions to the international community.

The Ministry of External Affairs reported that Doval and Wang also exchanged views on other bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual interest. It was mentioned, "NSA is eager to meet Wang Yi in India for the 24th round of Special Representative (SR) talks at a mutually convenient date."

China is hosting the SCO conference in its capacity as the current chair of the group.
