As December draws to a close, heavy snowfall continues to blanket many regions in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, setting the stage for a winter wonderland as the New Year approaches. This frosty cold is more pronounced in Himachal Pradesh, setting temperatures raging below zero and attracting tourists despite the weather. Across North India, a relentless cold wave holds its grip.

Temperatures plummeted to a frigid -7.3°C in Srinagar, with Lahaul-Spiti's Tabo earning the title of the coldest place in Himachal Pradesh as temperatures plunged to -10.6°C. A cold spell continued across parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.

Delhi's Temperature Above Average

On Christmas Day, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 22.4°C, which is 2 degrees above the season's average. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature was noted as 8.4°C, marginally 1.5 degrees below the norm. Most areas in Kashmir saw a drop in minimum temperatures, continuing a severe cold snap that’s freezing water supply lines in several regions.

Chilling Dip in Gulmarg's Mercury

Weather predictions indicate a further dip of two to three degrees in Kashmir’s minimum temperatures over the next couple of days. A notable exception is Gulmarg, where the mercury has settled to -6.6°C, a slight rise from the previous night's -7.4°C. No snow was recorded in Srinagar on Christmas.

Snowfall Blocks 226 Roads in Himachal

Heavy snowfall continues to cause disruptions in Himachal Pradesh, as reported by PTI. The state witnesses 226 roads blocked, including three national highways, with a fresh 10 cm of snowfall in Joat over the last 24 hours. According to the State Emergency Operation Center, Shimla has the highest closures with 123 roads, followed by 36 in Lahaul and Spiti, and 25 in Kullu. This disruption affects 173 transformers, interrupting power supply across the state. Nevertheless, Shimla saw clear skies on Wednesday, slightly dimming the festive mood. However, the weather department forecasts snow and rain across parts, especially in Shimla, from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, with Saturday promising heavy showers.

Mercury Dips in Rajasthan, Courtesy of Rain

Meanwhile, dense fog enveloped several areas in Rajasthan on Wednesday. Light rain was observed in one location over eastern Rajasthan, while many places experienced dense fog. Certain areas in western Rajasthan reported as 'cold days'.

Punjab and Haryana Reel Under Cold Spell

According to the weather department, Wednesday saw Punjab and Haryana gripped by intense cold. Faridkot registered the lowest minimum temperature of 4.2°C. Other notable recordings include 5.4°C in Amritsar, 5.7°C in Ludhiana, and 5.5°C in Gurdaspur, while in Haryana, Narnaul was coldest at 5.2°C, with Hisar hitting 6.8°C, Karnal and Sirsa settling at 8°C, and Gurgaon at 9.3°C; Chandigarh endured chills at 7.4°C.

Dense Fog Hovers Over UP Districts

The weather department noted a clearing across Uttar Pradesh by Wednesday afternoon, following two days of rain due to the western disturbance. Monday and Tuesday witnessed drizzles leading to widespread fog and a significant temperature drop over the past 48 hours, heightening the chill.
