According to the weather department's forecast, it may become intolerable to stay outdoors due to the cold and strong winds. Fog is expected to descend late at night, so exercising caution during New Year celebrations is advised.

Temperatures have already dropped since December 30 in areas of Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan, increasing the cold. A cold wave will persist in parts of West UP and North MP on January 1. Fog is likely in regions including Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, and the northeastern states late at night or early morning on December 31, extending to Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh by January 1. Locations like Uttarakhand, UP, Rajasthan, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Himachal Pradesh are expected to see fog till January 2.

Impact of Western Disturbances and Cold Winds

The active western disturbance has traversed the hilly terrains, with significant cold rains hitting the plains on December 27, continuing into December 28. Another pair of western disturbances is anticipated soon. Weather activities will continue in the hilly states from January 1 to 5, 2025, possibly extending into the following week. However, these rains and snowfalls will remain confined to the hills, with no expected impact on the plains. This results in a dry and cold week for Delhi.

Weather Activity Likely in the Next 24 Hours

As per Skymet, during the next 24 hours, light to moderate rain may occur in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep. Light scattered rain is possible in the Western Himalayas after 24 hours. Rain and snowfall could affect parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir from January 1. A drop in minimum temperatures is likely across Northwest, Central, and Eastern India.
