The NEET UG counseling and seat allotment process for 2024 might kick off in the third week of July. Following recent doubts about the counseling timeline, the government has revealed that the National Medical Commission (NMC) is expected to finalize the NEET UG and NEET PG seat matrix by the third week of July and mid-August, respectively. Post-finalization, the counseling process will commence.
NEET UG counseling was initially scheduled for July 6th
Previously, it was anticipated that NEET UG counseling would start on July 6th, 2024. On June 13th, 2024, before the Supreme Court vacation bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, the National Testing Agency's (NTA) lawyer announced that counseling could begin from July 6th. During the hearing of a petition, the NTA informed the Supreme Court of the cancellation of grace marks for 1563 students and the subsequent re-examination.
What did NTA's lawyer state in the Supreme Court regarding NEET UG counseling?
Representing NTA, lawyer Naresh Kaushik followed directives stating, 'The notification for the NEET UG re-examination will be issued today, and the exam will be conducted on June 23rd, 2024. Its results will be announced before June 30th, 2024, ensuring that counseling starting on July 6th, 2024, is not affected.'
Counseling date yet to be finalized by MCC
The Ministry of Health had announced on July 6th that the NEET UG 2024 counseling schedule is still pending. The notice stated, 'The announcement of the counseling schedule for NEET UG and PG is based on the completion of the examination process by MCC on their website and the finalization of the seat matrix by the National Medical Commission (NMC). In 2021, 2022, and 2023 respectively, counseling for UG seats began on 19/01/2022, 11/10/2022, and 20/07/2023.'
When will the NEET UG counseling schedule be released?
According to the notice, 'For 2024, NMC had prepared a schedule to finalize the UG and PG seat matrix by the last week of June, which indicates that the UG seat matrix and PG seat matrix will be finalized by the third week of July and mid-August, respectively. The MCC will notify the counseling schedule well in advance.'
Supreme Court to hold important hearing on NEET UG cases tomorrow
It's noteworthy that the Supreme Court bench led by CJI D Y Chandrachud with Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra will hear various petitions filed regarding the NEET UG 2024 on July 8th. Petitioners have alleged paper leaks, while some have requested the cancellation and reconduction of the entire medical entrance exam. Others have demanded an investigation into the operation of the National Testing Agency (NTA), among various other concerns raised in the petitions.
