In the wake of the controversy surrounding a chapter related to the judiciary in NCERT's 8th-grade social science book, the government is preparing amendments. The segment in question centered on the judiciary has sparked considerable debate.
According to sources, the material concerning the judiciary has been deemed unbalanced. Government officials state that making comments focused solely on the judiciary was inappropriate. If the discussion is about institutional structures, then the legislature and executive could also have been equally mentioned.
The citation of Justice Gavai has also been considered improper by sources. They assert that such presentations could convey misleading messages.
Today, the Chief Justice expressed dissatisfaction with this issue and, under these circumstances, the Supreme Court may take notice of the case on its own accord.
Supreme Court Expressed Displeasure
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (CJI) Surya Kant expressed strong displeasure over chapters related to 'Corruption in Judiciary' and 'Pending Cases' in NCERT's 8th-grade social science book. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu notice of this matter, viewing it as an attack on the institution's integrity.
When senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi raised this issue, CJI Surya Kant stated, "As a member of this institution, I am deeply disturbed that 8th-grade students are being taught about corruption in the judiciary. This is entirely scandalous." He firmly warned that no one would be permitted to tarnish the institution's image, regardless of who they are.
