Today marks Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 75th birthday. Born on September 17th, 1950, Modi holds the position of the nation's Prime Minister for the third consecutive time. Throughout his tenure, several beneficial schemes have been initiated, providing everything from free grains to electricity, reaching households across the nation. From fulfilling dreams of home ownership through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to offering free healthcare under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme and ensuring free electricity through the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, let's delve into the top 10 significant initiatives of the Modi government.
1- Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
To fulfill the dreams of home ownership for the underprivileged, the Modi government launched the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana on June 25th, 2015. To date, 3.61 crore houses have been completed under this scheme. The project, originally running since the fiscal year 2015-16, has been extended until 2029. The central cabinet has approved a proposal for the construction of an additional 2 crore rural homes with an expenditure of 3.06 lakh crore rupees.
2- PM Jan Dhan Yojana
Launched on August 28th, 2014, PM Jan Dhan Yojana aimed to bring every citizen into the banking sector. With no minimum balance requirement, it offers overdraft service allowing withdrawals of up to 10,000 rupees, RuPay debit card, accident insurance coverage, and more. By 2024, the scheme reached its 10th year with 56.04 crore accounts opened by August 2025, of which 55.22 crore are active. Notably, women hold 55-56% (around 31 crore) of these accounts.

3- PM Ujjwala Yojana
Aimed at providing relief from smoke-filled kitchens and offering clean fuel, PM Ujjwala Yojana was launched on May 1st, 2016. Under this initiative, BPL families receive free LPG connections and subsidized cylinders. Celebrating nine years in May 2025, the scheme has distributed 10.33 crore PMUY connections across India by March 1st, 2025.
4- Atal Pension Yojana
Introduced on May 9th, 2015, the Atal Pension Yojana secures pensions for those in the unorganized sector. Citizens aged 18 to 40 can open accounts and contribute regularly to receive a pension ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 rupees per month after age 60. As of April 2025, more than 7.65 crore accounts have been opened under this scheme.
5- Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana
Also launched during Modi’s first term on May 9th, 2015, this scheme provides accidental insurance coverage for those aged 18 to 70. For an annual premium of 20 rupees, a cover of up to 2 lakh rupees is provided. In cases of partial disability, a coverage of 1 lakh rupees is offered. According to PIB, enrollments total more than 51.06 crore, with claims reaching 3,121.02 crore rupees paid for 157,155 claims.
6- Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana
Initiated in 2015, this affordable life insurance policy provides 2 lakh rupees coverage for just 436 rupees annually, benefitting those aged 18 to 55. Over 23.63 crore enrollments have taken place, with payments totaling 18,397.92 crore rupees till April 23rd, 2025.
7- Ayushman Bharat Yojana
Established on September 23rd, 2018, Ayushman Bharat offers free healthcare up to 5 lakh rupees. The scheme was approved for expansion by the cabinet on September 11th, 2024, now including senior citizens aged 70 and above. This extension has supported 4.5 crore families, including 6 crore seniors. Over 34.7 crore Ayushman cards have been distributed under this initiative.
8- PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana
Among the most acclaimed schemes, this initiative targeted at farmers was launched on February 24th, 2019. Offering 6,000 rupees annually as financial aid distributed in three installments, it has seen 20 disbursements so far. Benefiting more than 85% of small and marginal farmers with less than two hectares, this scheme has proved to be a lifeline for Indian farmers.
9- PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana
This noteworthy scheme offering free ration was introduced on March 26th, 2020. Providing 5 kilos of free grains to 80 crore citizens every month, deadlines have consistently been extended. The scheme is set to extend another five years starting January 1st, 2024.
10- PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme
Launched on February 15th, 2024, this initiative offers 300 units of free electricity. Moreover, a substantial subsidy of up to 78,000 rupees is available for installing solar panels. By March 10th, 2025, over 10 lakh homes have adopted solar-powered panels, marking a historic achievement. Alongside 47.3 lakh applications, it has disbursed 4,770 crore rupees in subsidies to 6.13 lakh beneficiaries.
