Mehul Choksi, accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, is currently detained in a Belgium jail. The Indian government is actively pursuing his extradition. Consequently, the Indian government has addressed a letter to the Belgian government.
Through a letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs to the Belgian Minister of Justice, reassurance was provided regarding the conditions under which Mehul Choksi would be held upon being extradited to India. The Indian government has assured that Choksi will not be kept in solitary confinement.
The letter specifies that Choksi would be accommodated in barrack number 12, which will not be crowded. The barrack will be under constant surveillance. Choksi will have at least 3 square meters of personal space, excluding furniture. The barrack will include a mattress, cotton pillow, and bedsheets, along with blankets. Medical necessities might warrant a bed. Adequate lighting, ventilation, and storage for personal items will be available.
Choksi will have access to clean drinking water daily and round-the-clock medical services. Adequate restroom and bathing facilities will be provided daily. He will be permitted over an hour of exercise and recreation each day. Throughout his detention, sufficient food will be available.
The hearing for Mehul Choksi's extradition to India is scheduled for the second week of September. Following India's request, Belgium arrested Choksi in April this year, and he has been held in Antwerp's jail since. Recently, his bail plea was denied.
