Manmohan Singh’s Funeral: Final Farewell with State Honors

The funeral of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was conducted with full state honors today (December 28) at Delhi's Nigam Bodh Ghat. His eldest daughter, Upinder Singh, lit the funeral pyre. Among the attendees were President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi. Foreign dignitaries including Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Mauritius' Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful also paid their respects at the cremation ground.

Before the funeral, Manmohan Singh's body was brought to the Congress headquarters. It was kept there for about an hour where Congress workers and the public paid their tributes. A procession spanning 11 kilometers made its way from the Congress headquarters to Nigam Bodh Ghat. Rahul Gandhi personally participated in the procession.

Road Diversions in Place

The last journey of Dr. Manmohan Singh started from the Congress headquarters and proceeded towards India Gate on Akbar Road. From India Gate, it turned by Tilak Marg, and then right at the ITO Red Light. Passing by the old police headquarters, the procession took a left onto Ring Road, heading to Nigam Bodh Ghat. Throughout the procession, police and security personnel accompanied the cortege, and Delhi Traffic Police had diverted several roads from the Congress headquarters to Nigam Bodh Ghat for smooth passage.

Presence of Military Chiefs

Citing reports, Congress announced on December 27 that Manmohan Singh's body would be placed at the Congress headquarters the next morning. This led to a large gathering of party workers outside the site. Many senior Congress leaders visited. Early in the morning, Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Himachal Pradesh's CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also paid their respects at the Congress headquarters. The Chief of Defense Staff, General Anil Chauhan, along with the chiefs of the three armed forces, also paid homage to the late PM Manmohan Singh.

Hospitalization at AIIMS

On the evening of December 26, former PM Manmohan Singh's health deteriorated. After suddenly losing consciousness, he was admitted to AIIMS Hospital in Delhi, where he passed away at 9:51 PM. Upon learning of his death, Prime Minister Modi and numerous cabinet ministers paid their respects. The following day, December 27, PM Modi, along with many dignitaries, visited his residence to honor Manmohan Singh. President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi, along with several dignitaries, also attended the final farewell at Nigam Bodh Ghat.
