David Willey's Abrupt IPL Departure:

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 approaches its commencement on March 22, Lucknow Super Giants, led by KL Rahul, have faced a substantial setback. Star fast bowler David Willey has returned home before the tournament starts.

Having just played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the English left-arm pacer, David Willey was set to represent Lucknow in the IPL, but he has taken a personal break. However, new head coach Justin Langer anticipates Willey's return midway through the season.

Lucknow's 2 Crore Investment

Previously active with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the last two IPL seasons, David Willey was procured by the Lucknow franchise for 2 crores during the auction. Langer stated that due to continuous travel over the past two months, Willey decided to take time off to return home.

Willey had been active with Multan Sultans for PSL and ILT20 Abu Dhabi Knight Riders recently. The PSL final, held on March 18, saw Islamabad United claim victory over Multan Sultans. In this match, Willey scored 6 runs and took one wicket, although he couldn’t lead his team to the championship.

Lucknow franchise has yet to announce a replacement for David Willey, and his return date remains unconfirmed. Therefore, he could rejoin the IPL anytime. Willey has also participated in the 2023 One Day World Cup.

Star Player Bows Out Due to Workload

Prior to this development, Lucknow team, also under KL Rahul's captaincy, faced another significant loss. Mark Wood, another esteemed English fast bowler, withdrew from the IPL. Set to play in the T20 World Cup in June, Wood stepped back from the IPL at the behest of his English board for workload management. As his replacement, Shamrah Joseph has been added to the team.

At a press conference, Langer expressed concern over the lack of experience within the squad due to the absence of bowlers like Wood and Willey but also highlighted the immense talent and recovery of previously injured players on the team.
