In an unexpected turn of events, the show of stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra was called off in Gurgaon due to objections raised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). Kamra, in response, issued a letter challenging the VHP to present any video evidence where he disrespected Hinduism. He clarified that his satire targets the government and wondered how it was connected to the Hindu faith.
The much-anticipated event was scheduled for September 17 at Studio Xo Bar in Sector 29, Gurgaon. The VHP, concerned about potential communal discord, submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner urging the show's cancellation.
After the show's cancellation, Kamra questioned the allegations of Hindu disrespect, demanding evidence of such occurrences. His satire, he emphasized, is political in nature, focusing on government critique, not religious disrespect.
Kamra affirmed his respect for his spiritual relationship, declaring, 'I proudly say Jai Shri Sita-Ram and Jai Radha Krishna.' He committed to earning his living from honest work.
The VHP justified their protest by claiming Kamra mocked Hindu deities in his performances, leading to prior legal actions against him, and asserted this anxiety could spark tension in Gurgaon. They insisted the show be canceled immediately to avoid demonstrations by VHP and Bajrang Dal activists, seeking confirmation of the cancellation post-implementation.
