In the Kolkata rape-murder case, more than 70 doctors who have been honored with Padma awards have written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern over increasing violence against medical personnel. They have requested firm action on this grave issue. The letter written by the doctors appeals for the protection of doctors and other healthcare workers under existing laws.

The award-winning doctors have appealed to the Prime Minister not to forget this issue even after protests and public outrage have subsided and the situation has normalized. They also emphasized the responsibility to speak up on this issue and take the right measures in favor of the citizens.

Among those who signed the letter to the Prime Minister are Dr. Harsh Mahajan, Dr. Anoop Misra, Dr. Mohsin Wali, Dr. Pradeep Chowbey, Dr. Ashok Seth, Dr. Randeep Guleria, Dr. Balram Bhargava, Dr. Shiv Kumar Sarin, Dr. Yash Gulati, Ayurveda practitioner Dr. Devendra Triguna.

It is to be noted that five more accused have been arrested in the incident of vandalism at RG Kar Hospital, bringing the total number of arrested accused to 37.

What Did the Postmortem Report Reveal?

On August 9, 2024, a postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. She was raped and murdered. A detailed postmortem report obtained by Aaj Tak reveals the brutality faced by the victim. According to the PM report, there were over 14 injury marks on the deceased's body. No fractures were found.

Injury marks were found on the head, both cheeks, lips (inner and outer), nose, right jaw, chin, neck (near and above epiglottis), left hand, shoulder, knees, ankles, and private parts. The external and internal genitalia weighed 151 grams. The postmortem report indicates that blood clots were found in several body parts along with hemorrhage in the lungs. Samples of viscera, blood, and other collected samples have been sent to the lab for analysis.

The PM report states that all injuries found on the body and private parts of the victim were inflicted before her death. Based on the postmortem report, the medical officer stated that the victim died due to strangulation with both hands. There was medical evidence of forceful penetration in her private parts. The PM report mentions the possibility of the lady doctor's sexual assault.
