Can someone who committed a horrific crime like rape and murder remain completely carefree and untroubled? Can someone wanted by the police sleep soundly in the barrack of the same police force, even after drinking? Can a person, knowing that the police are searching for him, respond calmly with "I'll see"? These questions seem bizarre, but such is the truth of Sanjay Roy, accused in the RG Kar Medical College rape case in Kolkata. When Kolkata police arrested Sanjay Roy on August 9, he was found sleeping in the police barrack of the Kolkata Police's Fourth Battalion stationed at the hospital.
Before and after his arrest, the chain of events linked to Sanjay Roy clearly exposed not just the crime's truth but also his direct involvement. From the evening of August 8 through the night of August 9, the activities traced via CCTV cameras, mobile phone location, CDR, and eyewitness accounts are shocking. Kolkata police began their investigation on August 9 after receiving news of the doctor's murder.
The police first reviewed the CCTV footage around the emergency building and seminar hall of the hospital. They noticed at least 15 people around the seminar hall, all of whom were questioned. Since none of these individuals had any connection to the murder, they provided accurate answers and were cleared from suspicion. However, one person remained elusive because he went and slept in the police barrack after the crime, heavily intoxicated.
With the murder timing roughly established, police focused on the CCTV footage between 3 to 4 AM on the night of August 8-9. Sanjay Roy was seen near the seminar room during this period. Because he was also seen in other footages with a patient at the hospital, police took grabs of Sanjay’s CCTV footage and showed them to the hospitalized patient, who was the brother of civic volunteer Saurabh.
Half-day during the investigation, Saurabh identified Sanjay Roy from the photo, telling the police about him. By evening, the post-mortem of the trainee doctor, the victim, confirmed that the death occurred about 4 hours after the night meal, around 4 AM, aligning with Sanjay’s presence near the seminar hall at that time. Despite this, Sanjay remained at large.
Saurabh’s brother had identified Sanjay, but Saurabh didn’t yet know that the police were searching for him. Saurabh had called Sanjay for lunch, completely unaware. When notified by his brother that the police were looking for Sanjay in connection with the rape and murder at the hospital, he was shocked. Despite the news, when Sanjay sat for lunch with Saurabh and was informed, he nonchalantly said, "I'll see." He didn't eat but later drank again and slept in the barrack.
When Kolkata police found him, he was drunk and sleeping in the police barrack itself. Upon his arrest, he not only confessed but also asked, "Give me the death penalty..." The following day, during interrogations, Sanjay calmly confessed to everything, explaining the sequence to the police. The police also questioned Saurabh, who was with Sanjay the night before the crime.
Saurabh, also a civic volunteer, narrated that on August 8th, he admitted his brother for treatment at RG Kar Hospital, being at the hospital’s reception at 1:30 PM. He returned at 10:30 PM, finding Sanjay there. Both left for a drink and wandered in North Kolkata's red-light area, Sonagachi. While Saurabh went inside an establishment, Sanjay stood outside. Due to a lack of opportunity at Sonagachi, they decided to head to another red-light area, Chetla, 15 km away in South Kolkata. Despite being there too, Sanjay failed to engage due to lack of funds, as claimed, but police suspected he had already planned the crime. They rode back to the hospital, with Sanjay driving.
The investigation revealed Sanjay had called his girlfriend and requested private pictures while waiting outside Chetla. They eventually returned to RG Kar Hospital close to 3 AM, with Sanjay heading towards the hospital instead of the Fourth Battalion direction, claiming he would get there via a different route. Saurabh, oblivious, let him. He next saw Sanjay sleeping deeply when he tried to wake him for a hospital visit the next morning at 10 AM.
Despite several calls from Saurabh post the doctor visit, Sanjay didn’t answer. Saurabh wanted to call him for lunch but finished his meal alone by the time Sanjay responded. Saurabh then informed him about the hospital crime and people he knew. Sanjay, uninterested, dodged visiting the hospital, claiming he was in another drinking party.
Even on August 9, Sanjay appeared relaxed despite knowing the police were closing in. Finally arrested later that evening, his demeanor never showed remorse; he openly shared details with the police, explaining the events. Subsequent inquiries revealed Sanjay had likely planned the crime, not needing external instigation, contradicting previous suspicions of accomplices.
Currently, Sanjay Roy is in jail, charged with the crimes at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The 53 pieces of evidence gathered by Kolkata police and handed over to CBI form the basis of the charges, confirming his sole involvement and leading to imminent charges against him.
These pieces of evidence include technical proof, scene evidence, and belongings seized from Sanjay, implicating him further. The police had secured footage of him approaching the seminar hall, found a broken Bluetooth neckband paired to his phone, and recovered over 40 exhibits from the crime scene, all pointing towards his guilt. Independent witnesses and doctors' statements reinforced his involvement.
Additionally, medical examinations confirmed recent physical altercations linked to the crime, finding fresh scratches on Sanjay’s hands and thighs. The police also extracted data from Sanjay’s mobile phone, proving his presence at the crime scene and tracking his movements before and after the crime.
His phone revealed disturbing content including private images and violent pornographic videos. Fingerprints found on the doctor’s body and belongings matched Sanjay’s. His clothes, inner garments, and slippers carrying the doctor’s blood further linked him to the crime. Blood samples from the scene detected his DNA.
Finally, CCTV footage from a local bank captured Sanjay’s movements, cementing his whereabouts. These comprehensive pieces of evidence positioned him as the sole perpetrator of the horrific crime, now leading the CBI to proceed with a charge sheet, ensuring justice for the tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
