Before the onset of the IPL 2026 season, Kolkata Knight Riders face a significant setback as they have released Bangladesh's fast bowler, Mustafizur Rahman, from their squad. This decision was not made by KKR independently, but was taken following clear directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In recent weeks, controversy surrounding Mustafizur Rahman's participation in the IPL had intensified. Observing the situation, the BCCI intervened and instructed KKR to drop him from the team. Mustafizur's reaction to these developments has been unveiled.
How did Mustafizur Rahman respond?
Following his dismissal from the team, Mustafizur Rahman shared his thoughts with the Bangladeshi cricket website BDcricTime. He remarked, 'What can you do if you are dropped from the team?'

Mustafizur Rahman had been picked up by KKR for a whopping INR 9.20 crores during the IPL 2026 mini-auction in December 2025. Initially, this acquisition was lauded for his cricketing prowess, but soon the narrative was overshadowed by off-field controversies.
Political and Social Protests Fuel Dispute
Following Mustafizur's acquisition, certain political parties and religious groups voiced opposition. This dissent was particularly fueled by concerns regarding recent violent incidents in Bangladesh and the safety of minorities there.
The dispute escalated when BJP leader Koustav Bagchi openly objected to the inclusion of Bangladeshi players in the IPL matches held in Kolkata. Subsequently, co-owner Shah Rukh Khan of Kolkata Knight Riders also faced criticism from political and social circles.

Why Did BCCI Make This Decision?
Although BCCI didn't explicitly mention the political disputes, the board took cautious steps considering the circumstances. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia told India Today, 'Given the situation in the country and surrounding areas, BCCI instructed Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh's player Mustafizur Rahman from their team.' He also clarified that this decision was made considering the preparations for IPL 2026.
Official Statement from KKR
Kolkata Knight Riders issued an official statement on this matter saying, 'The Kolkata Knight Riders confirm that following instructions from BCCI and IPL management, Mustafizur Rahman has been released from the team ahead of the upcoming IPL season. This decision was made according to BCCI directives and all necessary procedures. As per the regulations, BCCI will permit Kolkata Knight Riders to recruit a replacement player, and this information will be shared in due course.'
