In Kerala, following an uproar over WhatsApp groups formed by IAS officers using someone's mobile number for Hindu and Muslim officers, the Vijayan government has responded decisively. On Monday, under the Left government's orders, IAS K. Gopalakrishnan was suspended for violating disciplinary guidelines. Another IAS officer has also faced action in connection to a different case.

According to a news agency, senior IAS K. Gopalakrishnan was suspended for creating a religion-based WhatsApp group among government officials, while action was taken against another officer, Prashant, for criticizing a senior IAS officer on social media. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued suspension orders based on a report from the Chief Secretary.

Gopalakrishnan was the Director of the Industry and Commerce Department

IAS Gopalakrishnan held the position of Director of the Industry and Commerce Department, whereas Prashant was tasked as the special secretary in the Department of Agricultural Development and Farmers' Welfare. The Thiruvananthapuram City Police investigated Gopalakrishnan and submitted their findings to the DGP.

Gopalakrishnan lodged a complaint with the police, claiming that his mobile had been hacked, leading to the creation of religion-based WhatsApp groups. According to sources, the IAS officer's phone wasn't hacked; Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner Sparjan Kumar stated that it remains unclear whether there was any manipulation of the device, as it had been 'reset.'

What Did IAS Gopalakrishnan's Complaint State?

In his complaint, IAS Gopalakrishnan detailed that WhatsApp groups named 'Mallu Hindu Officers' and 'Mallu Muslim Officers' were created using his number. A significant number of IAS officers were added to these groups, which sparked an uproar. It was noted that, typically, groups form among senior and junior officers, but high-ranking officials should not create such religious groups, as it goes against secular principles. Despite the controversy, these groups were disbanded the day after their creation. Nevertheless, the issue remains unresolved.
