A devastating accident in Dehradun, Uttarakhand's capital, has left the community shaken. Six young lives were tragically lost, and one remains critically injured after the horrific incident occurred around 2 a.m. in the Ballupur area. The vehicle involved, recently bought during Dhanteras celebrations, was yet to be registered with a license plate.
Reports indicate the tragedy unfolded near the ONGC crossing in Dehradun. A container was making a right turn when a speeding Innova Highcross crashed into it from behind with such force that the car was completely wrecked. The gruesome scene saw two of the victims decapitated and another's head severely injured by the car's roof. Witnesses were left horrified by the tragic sight.
The victims, aged between 19 and 24, included names such as 19-year-old Guneet from Sai Lok GMS Road, 23-year-old Kunal Kukreja from Rajendra Nagar, 24-year-old Rishabh Jain from Jakhan Rajpur Road, 23-year-old Navya Goyal from Tilak Road, 24-year-old Atul Agarwal from Kalidas Road, and 20-year-old Kamakshi from Kanwali Road. Siddhesh Agarwal, aged 25, survived but is severely injured.
Tragically, Atul Agarwal, who owned the ill-fated car, had recently purchased it for the Dhanteras festival. His father, Sunil Agarwal, is a prominent fireworks businessman, with Atul assisting in the family business.
Meanwhile, Kamakshi, a B.Com student who had cleared her CA exams, had informed her father she was staying over at a friend's house that night. Siddhesh's father mentioned his last conversation with his son was around 9 p.m., concerning closing the showroom and heading home.
Questions Arise on Social Media
The accident has sparked a wave of questions online: Were the youths intoxicated? Was racing a cause, potentially involving a BMW? Was the crash due to the sunroof being open, or brake failure? Why were smart city project cameras non-functional?
Siddhesh's father, Vipin Agarwal, urged the media to be sympathetic and not spread rumors. He refuted negative claims about his son. Sunil, a 15-year auto driver on this route, notes that vehicles often speed at night, and similar incidents have occurred before.
SSP's Statement on the Incident
Ajay Singh, Dehradun's SSP, stated that various narratives are circulating online. They reviewed road footage showing the car moving slowly elsewhere in the city. The involvement of a BMW is questionable, as evidence indicates the BMW left the area long before. Clarity may come once the surviving injured regains consciousness.
Officials confirmed the youths were inside the car, not using the sunroof. Toxicology reports did not show evidence of driving under the influence. Kids were celebrating at home, with some having left. Auto- and post-mortems suggest crash-related injuries. Singh noted a bottle found under the brake is being investigated to determine if it was there before or after the crash.
