Reliance is poised to make a grand entry into a new segment. Reports suggest that the company is testing its proprietary TV operating system, Jio TV OS, which will be based on Google's Android and set to rival Samsung's Tizen OS and LG's WebOS.
According to The Economic Times, Reliance is leveraging its partnership with Google to test Jio TV OS, aiming at domestic TV manufacturers, especially the rapidly growing small-scale players in India.
An executive revealed that
Jio TV OS
would be an open-source platform, allowing developers to create optimized apps for smart TVs and other connected devices, thus enriching the platform's app ecosystem.
Moreover, Reliance reportedly will not charge licensing fees for Jio TV OS, making it easily adoptable by smaller manufacturers and expected to intensify competition in the Indian smart TV market.

Another executive told The Economic Times that the absence of license fees will rapidly popularize Jio TV OS. They highlighted that major manufacturers like Samsung and LG, with their operating systems, are not expected to adopt this OS. Reliance is seeking agreements with domestic and smaller brands.
Reliance is also looking to promote JioCinema with its Jio TV OS. This move could help the company generate revenue and potentially integrate it with Jio Broadband subscriptions. Along with the operating system, Reliance might also launch smart TVs branded under Jio.
The company might introduce Jio's smart TVs in the entry-level segment. This news comes at a time when overall TV shipments in India have declined, though there has been growth in the larger screen segments, notably those above 55 inches.
