The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) overseeing the challenging and snowy 3,488 km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China is soon to establish 10 all-women border outposts (BOP). This announcement was made by ITBP Director General (DG) Praveen Kumar during the 64th Raising Day celebration held in Jammu.
215 Posts to be Set Up under the Forwardization Plan
The DG mentioned that following military tensions in Ladakh in 2020, the 'forwardization' plan has pushed the number of ITBP BOPs from 180 to 215. In 2023, the central government approved seven new battalions and a sector headquarters (comprising approximately 9,400 personnel), which has bolstered reach and surveillance capacity in border areas.
He indicated that ITBP plans to set up an additional 41 new forward posts on the India-China LAC, significantly reinforcing security and coordination.
Two All-Women Outposts Ready in Ladakh and Himachal
The ITBP is promoting female combat roles by preparing two all-women BOPs in Lukung, Ladakh and Thangi, Himachal Pradesh. In addition, eight more all-women BOPs will soon be operational in this sector.
