Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed that Hamas' Gaza leader Mohammad Sinwar was killed in an airstrike on May 13. Netanyahu stated, 'We have eliminated Mohammad Deif, Yahya Sinwar, and Mohammad Sinwar.' According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), Mohammad Sinwar was targeted in an attack on a tunnel hideout beneath a hospital in Gaza.

Initial reports suggested that Mohammad Sinwar was killed in an airstrike by Israel, but it was not confirmed until now, with Israeli PM Netanyahu affirming his death.

Rise of Hamas Leadership After Yahya Sinwar's Death

Mohammad Sinwar took over Hamas leadership in October 2024 after his brother Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks, was killed by Israeli forces in Rafah. Since then, Mohammad Sinwar has been the prominent leader in Gaza and was responsible for the remaining 58 Israeli hostages, about 21 of whom are believed to be alive.

Hamas Faces a Leadership Crisis

Mohammad Sinwar's death has left a significant void in Hamas' military leadership. Information suggests that Shabana is one of the leading contenders to become the next military chief of Hamas. Now, only Gaza City's Brigade Commander, Az-Edin-Al-Haddad, remains alive among Hamas' five original brigade commanders.
