The recent military crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran that erupted last month has sent shockwaves around the world, with the death toll surpassing 7,000. Concern grows as this number is likely to rise further.

Restrictions on the internet and communications in Iran mean the death counts have been slow to emerge, according to the U.S. human rights agency, and the numbers are steadily increasing. Previously, both the Iranian government and international human rights organizations released their death figures, with the U.S. agency confirming 7,002 deaths so far. Meanwhile, the Iranian government cited only 3,117 deaths on January 21.

Is Iran Seeking an Accord with the U.S.?

Currently, Iran is engaged in backdoor talks with the U.S. to shield its nuclear program. Iran's senior security official, Ali Larijani, has also met with representatives from Qatar, Oman, and Yemeni rebels. Larijani confirmed that dialogue between the U.S. and Iran has occurred through Omani channels, though no concrete agreements have been reached as of yet.

A direct confrontation between the U.S. and Iran seems imminent. Recently, the U.S. military shot down an Iranian drone. In an effort to pressure Iran, the U.S. has deployed its aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, and fighter jets to the Middle East.
