Just as the woes of the coronavirus pandemic begin to wane, a new virus has been identified in China. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), operating under India's Ministry of Health, is vigilantly observing this situation. Similar to the coronavirus, this is considered a seasonal virus and has been labeled as HMPV, or Human Metapneumovirus. The NCDC has stated, "We are closely monitoring the situation, gathering information, and will provide updates accordingly."
Sources indicate that data from December 16-22 reveals a recent spike in respiratory viruses, such as seasonal influenza, rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and notably HMPV. However, this year's measures for respiratory ailments in China are less intense compared to last year. As the winter approaches, it is anticipated that respiratory problems will increase in China and neighboring areas.
Doctor Arjun Dang, CEO of Dang's Lab, emphasized the necessity of establishing a system for the immediate identification of HMPV outbreaks in the country following its identification in China. He underscored that HMPV is a virus that tends to be overlooked, yet during seasonal changes, there is a noticeable rise in respiratory patients affected by it on a global scale.
Doctor Dang noted that during flu seasons, HMPV cases have been observed in their lab, particularly affecting sensitive groups such as young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immunity.
According to Doctor Dang, HMPV symptoms resemble those of other respiratory viruses, and if not promptly controlled, the virus could place a significant burden on healthcare systems. He pointed out that the 'Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)' test can be employed to treat HMPV.
