India's journey in the Paris Olympics 2024 has come to an end. Wrestler Ritika Hooda missed out on a medal in the 76 kg freestyle event after Kyrgyzstan's Aiperi Kyzy lost in the semi-finals. Had Kyzy reached the finals, Ritika would have had a chance to compete for the bronze through repechage. With Ritika out of the medal contention, India's current Olympics campaign concluded.
India Stuck at Six in Paris!
India bagged a total of six medals in the Paris Olympics. This tally includes five bronze and one silver. The silver came in athletics, whereas the three bronze medals were won in shooting. Additionally, India won one bronze each in wrestling and hockey. If the decision in wrestler Vinesh Phogat's case turns in India's favor, the medal tally could reach seven. However, it's confirmed that India did not win any gold medals in Paris, making the campaign somewhat unremarkable.
India's first medal in Paris 2024 was a bronze in shooting, secured by Manu Bhaker in the women's 10m air pistol event. Manu, alongside Sarabjot Singh, also clinched another bronze in the mixed team event. Swapnil Kusale earned the third bronze in the men's 50m rifle three-position event. The Indian men's hockey team bagged a bronze, followed by Neeraj Chopra who won a silver in javelin throw. Wrestler Aman Sehrawat contributed another bronze in the men's 57 kg freestyle event.
Tokyo Record Not Broken
The Tokyo Olympics (2020) saw India achieving a historic feat with seven medals, including one gold, making it the best performance in India's Olympic history. Expectations were high this time around for the medal tally to hit double digits. However, the outcome was contrary to the hopes. India couldn't secure even a single gold medal, with the tally stuck at six.
