India Vs New Zealand 2nd Test 2024 Analysis:
Team India faced a daunting task of chasing 359 runs against New Zealand in Pune. Though challenging, it wasn't impossible. Historically, India has only managed to chase down targets over 300 runs at home once, against England in Chennai in 2008. But the hope of replicating Chennai's triumph was dashed when Jaiswal fell in the second innings, causing the team's batting order to crumble.
India faced a 113-run loss in Pune, marking its first home series defeat in 12 years. The streak of 18 Test series wins was broken as New Zealand triumphed on Indian soil for the first time in a series. The way Indian batsmen, known for their prowess against spin, succumbed to Mitchell Santner was alarming. Perhaps it's time for Team India to revisit their spin training.
New Zealand scored 259 in their first innings, while India replied with only 156. In the second innings, New Zealand set a target of 359 by scoring 255. Santner emerged as the star with his 13 wickets throughout the match.
Post Jaiswal's dismissal, India's wickets fell like a house of cards. Batsmen came and went in quick succession, with Pant's unfortunate run-out at zero dashing hopes further, followed by Kohli's cheap departure. The dismissals of Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Sarfaraz Khan put the team off balance.
It's noteworthy that Gill, Sharma, Kohli, Jaiswal, and Khan were all ensnared by Santner's spin. Pant's run-out was orchestrated by a precise throw from Santner to wicketkeeper Tom Blundell.
After Pant's run-out, hopes were pinned on Kohli for a substantial innings, but he too succumbed to Santner's LBW appeal, leaving India at 147/5. Santner's magic struck again as he clean-bowled Sarfaraz Khan (9). It seemed Indian players forgot their spin skills entirely.
Washington Sundar (21) became the seventh wicket, caught at short leg off a Glenn Phillips' delivery, and despite efforts from Jadeja and Ashwin to stabilize the innings, Ashwin fell at 206. The tail-enders Akash Deep and Ravindra Jadeja also succumbed, resulting in a historic series loss to New Zealand at home.

The 2008 Dream Shattered
India has had the chance to chase targets over 300 at home 26 times, successfully doing so only once in 2008 against England. India last lost a home Test series to England in December 2012, where they were beaten 1-2 in a four-match series. Before the New Zealand series, India had won 18 consecutive home Test series.
