The third and final ODI match between India and Australia is underway in Sydney. Once again, the Indian captain faced disappointment at the toss. This marks the 18th consecutive instance where Team India's captain failed to win the toss in ODIs. For the ongoing series against Australia, it is the third time India has lost the toss.
Gill's Toss Troubles Continue
Indian captain Shubman Gill has managed to win only one toss out of the 10 matches he has captained this year. During the England tour, he lost all five Test match tosses. He also lost the toss in the Ahmedabad Test match against West Indies. Despite these setbacks, he found success in the Delhi Test match's toss. Yet on the Australian tour, he couldn't win the toss in any of the three matches.
India's 18 Consecutive ODI Toss Losses
India has endured its 18th straight toss loss in One Day Internationals. The last time India won a toss was on November 15, 2023, facing New Zealand in the ODI World Cup semifinal. The streak began when they lost the toss in the World Cup Final against Australia on November 19, 2023. Statistically, the chance of losing 18 tosses consecutively is just 1/131072, less than a one percent probability.
In most consecutive ODI toss losses, the Indian team had already surpassed the previous record-holder, the Netherlands, which lost 11 consecutive tosses. Among the 18 tosses India lost, 12 were under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, three under KL Rahul, and now three under Gill's leadership.
Two Changes in Playing-11
