Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is currently imprisoned for corruption and other charges. However, there are reports that he plans to stand for the Oxford University Chancellor election from prison.
According to a report by The Telegraph, Imran will run for the Chancellor's position at Oxford University through an online ballot from prison. The position became vacant after the resignation of Lord Patten, the chairman of the UK’s Tory Party, who had held the position for nearly 21 years.
The Chancellor position at Oxford University is traditionally appointed to graduates who have achieved prominence, including former students who have become leaders. Imran's advisor, Syed Zulfi Bukhari, stated that there is a demand for Imran to run for Chancellor, and once things are clear, a public announcement will be made, and a signature campaign will begin.
Other candidates for this position include former UK Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Boris Johnson. This will be the first time the Chancellor election will be conducted online.
Imran Khan, an Oxford graduate, studied Economics and Politics at Keble College in 1972. He served as Chancellor of the University of Bradford from 2005 to 2014. His decision to run for this position has surprised both his supporters and opponents.
Imran Khan is currently in Adiala Jail on various charges, including corruption and his involvement in the May 9 riots. The 71-year-old PTI chief made these claims in an interview with British media 'The Sunday Times' while being in jail. In the interview, he stated, 'I have been kept in a 7 by 8 feet 'death cell,' typically used for terrorists.'
Imran Remains in Adiala Jail
Imran Khan is in jail for three different cases: the Toshakhana corruption case, the Cipher case, and a non-Islamic marriage case. He has been held in the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi for one year. His wife, Bushra Bibi, is also held in the same jail.
There are over 200 cases registered against Imran Khan at present. He has been convicted in a few cases, granted bail in some, and had his sentences overturned, but has not been released. Imran Khan was arrested on August 5 last year following his conviction in the Toshakhana corruption case, and he has remained in jail for several other cases since then.
Toshakhana Case Arrest
Earlier this month, after his sentence in the non-Islamic marriage case was overturned, the court ruled that if Imran was not wanted in any other case, he should be released from jail. However, within hours, he was arrested again along with his 49-year-old wife, Bushra, in the Toshakhana case.
