In the heart of Batwar, Srinagar, a serene morning on the Jhelum River turned into a scene of despair when a boat carrying passengers, including more than a dozen schoolchildren, capsized. Four souls were lost to the river's depths, and three others are receiving treatment at Srinagar's SMHS Hospital.
Local residents of the Batwara-Ganderbal area shared their harrowing tale with India Today, explaining how, on Tuesday morning, a boat ferrying local youth and children overturned in tragedy. Four lives were prematurely taken, while others are now being cared for in the hospital. Rescue operations are ongoing.
When contacted, SMHS Hospital's Medical Superintendent Dr. Muzaffar Zargar confirmed the unfortunate demise of four individuals due to the incident, with three others under medical care.
Rainfall Raises River Levels
An official shed light on the incident, stating that, on Tuesday morning in the Naugam area of Ganderbal, a vessel was claimed by the Jhelum River, sending many into the water. The SDRF team has since retrieved four bodies from the river, with several people still missing. Rescue teams are on the scene, working diligently. Recent continuous rainfall has swollen the Jhelum and other rivers significantly.
Many School Children Were Onboard
It is reported that the boat was ferrying between 10 to 12 schoolchildren along with other passengers. Upon receiving news of the disaster, rescue teams immediately dispatched and commenced search and recovery efforts.
