In the state of Gujarat, private primary schools that do not receive government funding admit 25 percent of children from underprivileged and disadvantaged groups into Class 1 under the RTE (Right to Education) Act. Their parents need to visit the respective schools with documents by May 28 to finalize the admission process.
7,378 Seats Still Vacant
Even after the second round, many seats remain unfilled. Statewide, private schools have a total of 7,378 Class 1 seats that are yet to be filled. The main reason for this is parents not selecting schools. The breakdown of vacant seats by medium is as follows:
Gujarati Medium: 728 seats
English Medium: 4,564 seats
Hindi Medium: 1,920 seats
Other Mediums: 166 seats
86,264 Children Admitted in the First Round
For the academic year 2025-26, a total of 94,798 seats were made available under RTE in 9,814 private primary schools in Gujarat. In the first round of admissions conducted as per the rules, such as the school being within a 6-kilometer radius and other eligibility criteria, a total of 86,264 children were admitted. Out of these, 80,453 children confirmed their admissions by submitting documents within the stipulated time.
The Importance of the Second Round
After the first round, there were 14,345 seats left unoccupied. To provide opportunities to more children from deprived sections, a second round of admissions under RTE was initiated. For this, 89,445 parents who were not able to secure admissions in the first round were given a chance to re-select schools from May 15 to 17.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, 45,695 parents selected new schools, while the remaining 43,750 chose to stick with their initial selections.
