India's head coach Gautam Gambhir advises Test specialist players to engage in Ranji Trophy matches rather than solely training at the Bengaluru Centre of Excellence (COA). Playing for their state teams offers invaluable match experience.
Gambhir stressed that there's no substitute for match practice, especially given the tight schedule ahead of the Test series against South Africa. India's T20 team wraps up its final match against Australia on November 9 in Brisbane, with the Test series set to begin on November 14 in Kolkata.
Gambhir commented, “Professionalism demands maximizing each day. Transitioning between formats happens swiftly, and domestic cricket provides the best preparation for Test players.”
He reiterated the importance of the Ranji Trophy and four-day matches against South Africa A as crucial precursors to the Test series. Gambhir stated, “Playing the Ranji Trophy before the South Africa series is crucial; the team’s thorough preparation will be evident on the field.”
Which Players Can Participate in the Ranji Trophy?
Players not included in the T20 squad for Australia, such as Sai Sudharsan, Ravindra Jadeja, Devdutt Padikkal, and Narayan Jagadeesan, are potential candidates for the Ranji Trophy rounds. Rishabh Pant, recovering from injury, may play for Delhi in the second Ranji round. Additionally, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, and KL Rahul might be available post the ODI series.
'India A Matches Have Prepared Test Players Well'
Gambhir also pointed out that India A matches provided valuable preparation for Test players ahead of the series. Referencing KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel, and Devdutt Padikkal, he highlighted their valuable experiences against Australia A and England Lions.
“For players engaged in all three formats, it's challenging, but the Test team has benefited greatly from playing India A games, enhancing their readiness,” he remarked.
