From Incarceration to Education, University's Convocation Makes History

The sixth convocation at Krishna Kanta Handiqui Open University sees a blend of young and elderly graduates, along with a commendable inmate.

The Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University of Assam held its sixth convocation, conferring degrees and diplomas to over 10,800 students, an event marked by the extraordinary achievement of a jailed accused and students in their seventies obtaining their degrees. The Governor of Assam, Prof. Gulab Chand Kataria, and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Haryana, Prof. Sushma Yadav, graced the event.

An impressive 10,800 students were honored with degrees/diplomas

Women comprised 49% of the awarded students. Outstanding performers received gold medals, with 28 students being recipients. Notably, 75-year-old Chandra Prabhu Mahanta and 72-year-old Mahendra Bhuyan were present to receive their graduation and post-graduation degrees, respectively. Additionally, seven inmates from various jails in the state successfully completed their studies; one from Guwahati Central Jail proudly received his degree at the ceremony.

The University has actively implemented new educational policies

During the ceremony, the Governor of Assam praised the university for enhancing the scope of higher education and commended its efforts in providing education to a significant portion of the state's female population, aligning with the motto 'Education Beyond Barriers.' Prof. Yadav applauded the university for proactively implementing the New Education Policy starting from the academic session of July 2023.

The university offers a variety of academic programs

Located in Guwahati, Assam, the Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University conducts diverse academic programs for students, including undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil, Ph.D., diploma, and certificate courses, in addition to capacity-building programs for school teachers.
