Instances where a politician's relative escapes penalties are commonplace, but in a commendable turn, an MLA's family in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, chose to respect the rules when their son was fined for not wearing a seat belt.
During a routine police check, the son of BJP MLA Kanchan Tanwani was stopped and fined for driving without wearing his seat belt. The MLA's spouse, Mukesh Tanwani, approached the police station to discuss the incident but ultimately reinforced the lesson that all citizens, irrespective of their status, must adhere to traffic laws or shoulder the penalties.
MLA spouse Mukesh Tanwani stated that when his son was stopped by the police for not wearing a seat belt, he tried to avoid the citation. However, Mukesh clarified that he did not interfere and advised his son to either humbly request or resolve by paying the fine, underscoring the principle that laws apply equally to everyone.
It is noteworthy that the disciplined son's mother, Kanchan Tanwani, has a grassroots political background. With education till the 12th grade, she first worked in a community childcare centre, later leaving the job to enter politics. As an independent candidate, she won an election and rose to become the chairperson of the district council before the BJP later absorbed her into their fold.
In the 2023 assembly elections, Kanchan Mukesh Tanwani defeated the Congress candidate by more than 37,000 votes, thanks to her strong local support.
Before her political ascent, Kanchan Mukesh Tanwani achieved the post of district council chairperson without BJP's initial support, only to be welcomed into the party later. She openly contested against the impediments placed by the then-party representative, Devendra Verma, during the election phase.
Significantly, the BJP scored massive victories across all four constituencies in Khandwa district, maintaining a stronghold. Minister Vijay Shah's victory from the Harsud constituency was monumental as he was elected to the assembly for the eighth consecutive time, defeating the Congress candidate by an overwhelming sixty thousand votes margin.
