In Bengaluru, 34-year-old AI Engineer Atul Subhash, originally from Uttar Pradesh, tragically took his own life. He left behind a 24-page suicide note and a 1.5-hour video, accusing his wife and in-laws of harassment and false accusations. Atul's younger brother, Vikas Modi, revealed to Aaj Tak that Atul was facing 9 to 10 false legal cases and ultimately sacrificed his life while battling against the corrupt system.
Vikas Modi shared that he learned of his brother's fate early Monday morning. He said, "At 2:50 AM on Monday, I received a call from an unknown number. The caller asked if I had spoken with Atul. I explained that I had talked to him on Sunday night, and he seemed fine. When the caller inquired about suicidal thoughts, I was taken aback and questioned their intentions."
'Initially thought my WhatsApp was hacked, but…'
Vikas continued, "Believing it was a prank call, I checked my WhatsApp and found multiple messages from Atul. An hour prior, he had sent four emails listing names and contacts of several individuals. Despite this, I was convinced my WhatsApp had been hacked. Upon calling back the individual, I discovered they were associated with the Save Indian Family Foundation, an NGO advocating for men's rights."
‘My brother’s body was found hanging’
The NGO reported the situation to the police. When officers arrived at Atul's home, they initially hesitated to break the door, assuming he was absent since his car was missing from the parking space. The police later informed Vikas about the incident, urging him to get to Bengaluru at the earliest. Upon his arrival, Vikas found that Atul had taken his own life. His brother’s body was discovered hanging in the apartment.
Every page of the suicide note declared, 'I must have justice'
Modi expressed disbelief, saying, "I couldn't fathom that Atul, ever so resilient, did this. On each page of his suicide note, he demanded justice. He attributed his actions to relentless harassment from his wife's family and systemic corruption." Legal battles plagued Atul, with demands for 3 crore rupees to settle disputes.
'My brother sacrificed his life fighting the system'
Vikas explained, "People working in Bengaluru find it challenging to constantly travel to Uttar Pradesh for court cases. Yet, Atul was persistently troubled with numerous false cases against him. He sacrificed his life fighting the system, urgently needing justice. His wife took unfair advantage of laws meant to protect women, demanding 40,000 rupees alimony for a 4-year-old child, which wasn't justified."
Atul wrote - If denied justice, immerse my ashes in a gutter
In his note, Atul requested justice, stating if not achieved, his ashes should be dispersed in a gutter outside the court, symbolizing his soul’s unrest from systemic injustice. A police officer confirmed Atul emailed his suicide note to numerous individuals and shared it in an NGO's WhatsApp group before the incident.
Emails and WhatsApp messages sent before the suicide
Prior to his death, Atul messaged, "Sir, this message is to say goodbye. Please assist my family if you can. Thank you for your support." He included links to his video and suicide note. At his home, a sign was hung stating, 'Justice is yet to be served.' He posted crucial details on his cupboard. This event has left the entire nation in shock.
