China and the Philippines are on the brink of an armed clash. If war breaks out in the South China Sea, it could potentially escalate into a mammoth conflict, even World War 3, given the U.S. support for the Philippines. China’s aggression might precipitate a direct standoff with the U.S. as well.

An altercation occurred on June 17, 2024, between the Chinese navy and the Philippine coast guard. Chinese sailors impeded a Philippine resupply vessel, blasted it with water cannons, and attacked with swords, knives, and other weapons. This resulted in a Filipino Marine's finger being severed. The Philippines accused Chinese soldiers of trespassing into its territorial waters.

Philippine defense agencies, notably the Philippine Coast Guard, are tasked with protecting the nation's maritime frontiers, especially in the West Philippine Sea. Chinese maritime forces towed, rammed, and shoved a Philippine resupply ship, igniting a brawl between the soldiers and resulting in numerous injuries.

According to Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, China’s hazardous and reckless actions disrupt peace in the region. Conversely, China accuses Filipino vessels of approaching Chinese ships.

Concerns of minor skirmishes leading to a larger conflict loom as America is bound to intervene due to its defense treaty with the Philippines. Previous incidents at Second Thomas Shoal this year already signal an erosion of peace and stability in the South China Sea.

In response to China's provocations, the Philippine Coast Guard has deployed two patrol vessels to safeguard Filipino fishermen from any threats. Negotiations are tense, with both parties accusing the other of assault and incursion, poised on the edge of armed conflict.

The Philippines has procured BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India to deter China and has strategically positioned them towards the South China Sea. Additionally, the Philippines actively participates in military exercises with ally nations. The U.S. has deployed weaponry in the Philippines, such as the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and the MRC/Typhon System, making it possible to launch Tomahawk and SM-6 missiles.
