While the Ghazipur landfill has yet to be extinguished, another alarming fire has broken out at a landfill site in Delhi-NCR. Besides Ghazipur, the second fire has ignited at the Bandhwari landfill in Gurugram. Emergency services are currently present at the site, with no reports of injuries.
It's important to note that the Ghazipur landfill caught fire on Sunday evening, and even after 40 hours, the fire has yet to be fully contained. The raging flames have resulted in a thick haze of smoke blanketing the vicinity, causing considerable breathing difficulties for the locals.
The Ghazipur landfill site caught fire around 5:30 PM on Sunday, and by late Monday night, teams had managed to contain 90% of the blaze. Late into the night, the MCD announced that 90 percent of the fire had been doused and approximately 40-50 distinct small fires remained within a 3,000 square meter area. Around 600 metric tons of inert and C&D waste were used to put out the fire.
To control the fire, 16 excavators, 2 bulldozers, and 6 fire trucks were deployed. Water sprinklers were also utilized to prevent ash and dust particles from spreading to surrounding areas.
Officials suggest that the hot and dry weather is a likely contributor to the outbreak of the fire. Additionally, the Ghazipur landfill site had witnessed three fire incidents in 2022. The fire that broke out on March 28th of that year took more than 50 hours to extinguish.
