In India's capital, where diversity is considered a strength, people from the Northeast still face discrimination based on their appearance and diet. A racial remark incident involving a couple harassing three women from Arunachal Pradesh has surfaced in Malviya Nagar. The victims have reported this to the police, who have registered a case and started an investigation. A video capturing this incident has gone viral on social media, showing the police presence and the couple's offensive remarks.
Arrival at the Police Station
The images you see are from Sunday evening at Malviay Nagar Police Station, where the North East victims arrived to file a complaint about the racial slurs against them. The police at Malviya Nagar Police Station have registered the case and are currently investigating.
Dust Incident Escalation
The victims stated that they reside in an apartment in the Malviya Nagar area and were installing air conditioning before the summer. Technicians were drilling in the building to install the AC when some dust fell onto a lower house's balcony. The residents confronted the technicians, leading to a heated argument. When the women intervened to mediate, the couple made demeaning comments towards them.
'Sleep with my husband for ₹500'
The women recounted that the couple called them massage parlor workers and accused them of sleeping with people for ₹500. The woman in the couple even said, 'Sleep with my husband for ₹500.' They insulted us further with derogatory terms tied to our cultural background.
Common Racial Slurs
The women mentioned that although they also live in India, they face differential treatment due to their distinct appearance. 'In Delhi, we constantly hear slurs such as momo, chowmein, and other racial insults,' they said, 'but the abusive language in this incident has become intolerable. Being a new generation, we must change things.'
'A Northeast-Wide Issue'
They stated, 'We were labeled as massage parlor workers, receiving racial slurs. This is not just a personal issue; it affects the entire Northeast. That is why we filed a report with the police. We are receiving support and hope to see further developments as the case progresses.'
