The Delhi government is pioneering a lottery system on March 5 to admit students from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Disadvantaged Group (DG), and Children with Special Needs (CWSN) categories into city schools. According to Education Minister Ashish Sood, transparency is key in every step, requiring all schools to adhere to new guidelines. This recently implemented process will unfold before both parents and the media.
The Directorate of Education issued a circular to ensure compliance with the new rules for EWS student admissions, warning of consequences for non-compliance. Admission will be conducted strictly through a computerized lucky draw. Schools are mandated to fully embrace this transparent system.

An income cap of ₹5 lakh annually is set for EWS category students. The computerized draw ensures zero human interference, with 2.5 lakh applications received and 38,000 students to be admitted through this process. A detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been established, and the Directorate of Education, using its zonal offices, will verify certificates instead of schools. This change guarantees schools cannot unjustly deny admission under the EWS, DG, or CWSN categories. The entire process will be broadcasted live on large screens outside the Directorate of Education for transparency, as stated by Education Minister.
The Directorate warns against false claims from individuals or organizations alleging they can assist with admissions, labeling such promises as entirely misleading.
